Summer Course in Mongolian Language and Culture

The Institute for Mongolian Studies at National University of Mongolia offers a summer course on Mongolian language and culture that attracts participants from around the world. Held on the NUM campus in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, the two week program includes language study with an emphasis on speaking and an immersive experience in contemporary Mongolian culture and society. In addition to time in the classroom, participants visit historical and culture sites in Ulaanbaatar and the countryside to learn about nomadic life and the natural environment. The daily schedule also allows students to explore on their own.

The NUM program fee of $1,500 includes study materials, accommodations in the international students dormitory, meals, entry fees to cultural and historical sites, and local transportation. Participants are responsible for their airfare and obtaining a visa to enter the country. Additional expenses include study abroad health insurance provided by Western, an Education Abroad application and current enrollment fee, and spending money. Program costs are partially offset by a scholarship that covers the NUM program fee. Eligible students must be enrolled as degree-seeking students at WWU and will receive 3 INTL summer credits upon successfully completing the program.

Applications are due by April 1, and the program typically begins in early August.

Study Abroad in Mongolia and Pay in-State Tuition

Want to study abroad in Mongolia and pay in-state tuition? National University of Mongolia — the country’s oldest and located in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar — offers an immersive semester-long program focused on learning Mongolian and exploring the country’s rich history and culture. Alongside other international students, you will take courses in writing and speaking the local language as well as in cultural studies. 

The university also offers English-language courses in the School of International Relations and School of Business. Eligible students receive a $4,000 scholarship.
